The Wheel of Death and the Art of Leadership: Building Trust in Leadership

Trust in leadership

Teamwork isn’t always forged in conference rooms or brainstorming sessions. Sometimes, the clearest lessons about trust, safety, and unity appear in moments where survival depends on collaboration.

Just like in business, the essence of leadership is about creating a culture of trust in leadership, psychological safety, and shared responsibility.

The Wheel of Death Lesson: Trust Under Pressure

In my performance life, I rode the Wheel of Death while knives were thrown around me. In that moment, trust & skill weren’t optional;  it was life or death. I had to trust that my teammate was exactly where they needed to be, doing exactly what they were supposed to do. A fraction of hesitation, one misstep, and someone could have broken a bone…or worse.

That’s what true teamwork is: a shared responsibility where every individual’s role protects and strengthens the others. ( And maybe not traumatizing the audience in the process)

Psychological Safety as the Foundation

But teamwork isn’t just about physical safety; it’s also about psychological safety. When people feel safe to speak up, to be seen, and to be acknowledged, not only by their leaders but also by their peers, they gain the confidence to step fully into their role.

Safety creates trust. And trust fuels growth.

Without that safety, teams become quiet and withdrawn. Ideas shrink. Innovation stalls. Leaders grow frustrated when participation drops, not realizing the silence is often a symptom of teammates who don’t feel secure enough to contribute.

Leadership Beyond Titles

This is where leadership makes the difference. Leadership is not a title- it’s deliberate action. It comes from within, guided by the best interests of everyone on the team. Real leadership means creating conditions where people can step up into their roles with or without your presence. It isn’t about being irreplaceable- it’s about building a culture that celebrates what has been taught, shared, and lived out in full support of one another.

This, too, is where safety comes in. When leaders guide with trust and integrity, a team becomes one. It stops being a competition of individuals and starts functioning as a collective. Labels fade. Titles matter less. What remains is unity- each person confident in their place, clear in their role, and safe to deliver their best.

Moving from Survival to Growth

When leaders build that kind of environment, something shifts. People stop worrying about self-protection and start focusing on team protection. They stop holding back and start showing up. They move from survival into growth mode. Every aspect becomes more productive as a whole.

Safety First

The same principle applies in business. Your team doesn’t have to dodge knives for safety and trust to matter. Every project, campaign, or strategy depends on people feeling secure enough to step up, follow through, and lead when it’s their turn.

When safety comes first, teams don’t just perform- they thrive moving forward confident, supported, and unstoppable. So, in the grand finale, everyone stands center stage.
