AI, Automation, and the Art of Humanity in Marketing

by Jun 15, 2024Trends

In an era characterized by rapid technological advancements, the interplay between AI, automation, and the intrinsic human touch within marketing is a critical and fairly new consideration. Striking the right balance between cutting-edge technology and genuine human connection holds the key to shaping the future of dynamic and effective marketing strategies.

People, the allure of streamlined processes is a powerful siren song. I hope this article will help you to enjoy the music without crashing into the rocks. Automation is not only a time-saver, but it’s also a headache reducer and a busy-work eradicator. I love automation; I do! BUT, I strongly urge my clients to resist automating away too many of their personal touchpoints. With AI often driving automation, that siren, her song is louder and more melodic than ever. The value of relationships and human-to-human interaction should remain sacrosanct.

Conversely, recognizing AI as a versatile time-saving resource marks the beginning of harnessing its true potential. While ethical considerations linger, the undeniable utility of AI is redefining the landscape of marketing strategies in innovative and unprecedented ways.

Within our agency, AI has evolved into an indispensable collaborative tool, amplifying human efforts rather than supplanting them. From shaping succinct social copy (some of us have not been anointed by the brevity fairy) to expediting research endeavors, AI’s contributions are profound. A glimpse into discussions among TikTok creators reveals the emergence of AI Prompt Engineering courses, underlining its burgeoning importance. The mastery of framing questions to glean optimal AI-generated outcomes remains an art to be honed. Watch out for those newly minted courses to help you become an “expert” in two hours for just $7.99.

Essentially, with AI, you only get as good as you give … or rather, as good as you ask. Admittedly, it’s fun to play with ChatGPT and its counterparts.

I’ve found that I spend a fair amount of time “teaching” AI how to produce a result that, ultimately, I could write myself. And, yeah, AI doesn’t misspell “definitely” (as I often do). I also doubt AI would cause my 7th-grade English teacher, Mrs. Wilson, to jump up and down over the improper use of commas. So, there’s certainly that.

One thing is certain, AI is not making us better as fast as we are making it better. With every keystroke each of us enters about any given subject and every well-engineered prompt we craft to save ourselves time, AI learns and improves. It’s a little scary, right?

Let me be clear, I’m not waxing all Skynet over here; this article is not a warning.

In spite of experts ringing alarms of certain doom, I believe AI has its place and can be a fantastic companion to human ingenuity and creativity. The trajectory of AI’s evolution is intricately intertwined with human input. This shared journey, though unsettling at times, underscores the power of human guidance in steering AI’s growth.

It’s funny, though; sometimes, using AI reminds me of the time my dad bought us a Commodore VIC 20, one of the first affordable personal computers. Dad spent ALL day typing code into the computer so that the keyboard would act as a piano. Through endless syntax errors and sporadic cussin’ fits, Dad successfully entered the program, and he finally got to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on the computer. Mind you, we owned a perfectly good, well-tuned piano.

All allegories aside, and contrary to dystopian narratives, AI emerges not as the antagonist we should rail against but as a collaborative ally. Amid the echoes of cautionary tales, I believe in AI’s capacity to complement human ingenuity and creativity.

I’m not fearful of AI because the humanity in your interactions and efforts matters. More than that, for brands or individuals, the “YOU” in your interactions is what matters. Authentic connection matters. Even as AI’s capabilities expand, it remains a tool devoid of the intrinsic human essence.

So, until the Autobots take over completely, we will keep our human fingers on the pulse of communication … even though it’s very tempting to automate responses and sit back while our AI Oompa Loompas do all the work.

As AI’s capabilities progress in leaps and bounds, the underlying message resonates: if AI serves as the main dish, then human ingenuity and creativity are the seasoning (and the butter, don’t leave out the butter). The future necessitates leveraging AI’s potential while preserving the warmth and authenticity of human interaction because, at the end of the day, people need people (and this from an introvert who really doesn’t like too many people).

As we march forward (some of us are probably being dragged kicking and screaming) into a realm where AI might mimic heartfelt conversations, the preservation of authenticity in marketing stands as an unwavering guiding principle. With AI as our collaborator and not a mere replacement, the humanity within marketing continues to thrive.
